Developer Day Scotland 2008

May 9th, 2008

My is it really February I last posted here, I didn’t mean to ignore this place for that long. Anyway tomorrow I’ll be giving up (I could be in the garden for goodness sake - well that assumes the recent good weather holds) my Saturday to head through to Glasgow for Developer Day Scotland 2008. I have to say I’m really looking forward to it. There was a time recently that I would likely not have bothered, but recent changes at work and things calming down on the home front has meant I’ve got my geeky interest back again. If truth be told I’ve been going through the motions for some time and had just been working away not really that bothered with experimenting with new technologies or even delving deeper into what I do day to day. Part of this was the legacy stuff I’d been working on as part of my day job - it was just draining the life out of me, but I persisted as I knew new projects were on the horizon and as I suspected being thrown in at the deep end with some new things worked it’s magic with me once again. Another contributory factor was the iPod I purchased on our holiday in the US last year, I discovered podcasts. Now I knew they could have just been downloading them and listening to them on my PC, but I simply didn’t bother with that. In any case I’ve got a few technical ones that I listen to regularly that have piqued my interest again when it comes to development and new tech in general.

Roll on tomorrow.

Save Planet Rock

February 12th, 2008

GCap Media have decided to close the only radio station I really listen to anymore, for music anyway - the mighty Planet Rock. Time is short, I believe there are 6 weeks to find a buyer, if not it will be sad day for radio in UK. I have set up a blog SavePlanetRock to try and bring together the diverse nature of the beast that is the internet and the ongoing support being expressed for the station by those of us who listen to it. The blog has links to the various areas of the web where people are gathering in support of the station be it Facebook, Myspace or the station’s own forums. There is a page where you can directly register your support here, or you can do it here in the forums (requires registration).

Ah well

October 2nd, 2007

Looks like my name didn’t come out of the hat for the Zep gig. Interestingly yesterday afternoon while listening to Planet Rock it appeared that no-one had yet received an email. One of the DJs asked folk to contact them if they’d received “the email”. There were a few folk that emailed in, including some that are active on some Led Zeppelin forums and no-one so far had heard anything. Although according to BBC if you hadn’t received the email by midnight (BST) last night then you are out of luck, so looks like I’m definitely not going then. Oh and to top it off I didn’t win the £88million on the Euro millions draw either (did win £7.90 though). I’ll just have to console myself with a visit to the barn like surroundings of the SECC to see my favourite band in the whole wide word, Rush, on Wednesday evening.
